A Single Girl's Guide to Valentine's Day

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I've been watching my feeds fill up with pink and red, and tonnes of fabulous heart-shaped DIY's. Now, I must confess:

I'm single but I love V-Day! I thought I would share a few things you can do to not just survive Valentine's Day, but ENJOY it!

1. Make plans - If being alone on Valentine's Day makes you feel sad, make plans! Get together with friends and go out, or plan a special night in with your favourite chick flick OR action movie. Remember not all of your 'coupled' friends celebrate Valentine's Day or are able to celebrate on the 14th. Don't be afraid to invite them - they might be in need of a girls' night out as much as you are! For the last few years, a friend and I have made a little tradition of going out on Valentine's Day, even though she has always been in a relationship!

2. Embrace the cheese - Do all sorts of cheesy Valentine's Day type of stuff. Buy flowers. Eat pretty chocolates out of heart-shaped boxes. Give out Valentine's to all your friends and co-workers, elementary school style! Decorate your home in honour of the day. Seriously! Make your house look like cupid puked red, pink and sparkles -then try and tell me that it didn't make you smile!

14% of women send flowers to themselves on valentine's day!

3. Celebrate the ones you love - So you may not have a hunky man to shower with love this Valentine's Day, but there are other people in your life you love and adore. Send a card to your mom or grandma. Make a giant heart-shaped sugar cookie with pink icing and cinnamon hearts and give it to your BFF. My mom made these for us growing up and they were my fav!

4. Do something nice for someone else - One of my friends and her husband have decided to offer free babysitting on Valentine's Day to give another couple a chance to go out on a date. Sweet, right? Think of single parents, or military spouses. Think of other people who may be feeling more alone than ever.

5. It's just a day  - As easy as it can be at times to believe the lie that everyone on earth is out on a big romantic date except for you, remember that it's just a day. Not everyone is in a relationship and not everyone may be that in to celebrating (see #1). It's just another normal day for most people. You don't have to treat it like anything special if you don't want to. Just do your thing!

How do you feel about Valentine's Day?
