Sewing a Skirt with a Vintage Simplicity Pattern

I attended Alt Summit in Salt Lake City this year for the very first time. I'm still undecided if I'm going to do a summary post about my experiences, but at the very least you'll get to see one of my outfits!

On the first night of Alt, I attended a dinner hosted by Kollabora (check them out!). Before the event, they requested that we arrive wearing something we had made. I was already planning to make a skirt to wear at some point during Alt Summit, so it was perfect. Perfect, except for the fact that I procrastinated making it until 2 days before I left. Yikes! Why do I do that?

The pattern I used was this old school Simplicity pattern I thrifted about a year ago. I loved the large pockets, but I was also intrigued that it could be a skirt, pants OR shorts!

The fabric I selected was a black with ivory polkadots soft polyester. This pattern is intended to be used with sturdier fabrics than what I chose. I cursed myself once (okay, maybe twice) for selecting such a slinky fabric, but I was super happy with how the pockets ended up being kinda droopy. I found the results to be a playful, modern take on an old pattern.

Have you ever used a vintage sewing pattern? Did you do anything to give it a modern spin?
