To start, you'll need two pieces of wood with a 1/4" thickness. I found these precious wooden plaques at the thrift store for a whole 25 cents a piece! It took a little elbow grease to peel and sand off the paper, but you can buy some thin plywood at the hardware store. These wood pieces are 5" by 7."
Here are the other supplies you'll need:
- power drill with a 1/16" bit
- sandpaper
- embroidery floss in your favourite colour
- embroidery needle
- scissors
- tape
- printed pattern*
*I have provided a pattern which you are free to use, for personal use only of course! Download this free PDF pattern here. You're welcome!
First, gently sand your wood pieces to create a smooth surface. Then center your pattern in the middle of your wood piece and tape it in place.
Set your wood onto a damageable surface (scrap wood or workbench) and carefully drill through the dots on the pattern and through the wood. If your drill has a reverse function, use it!
When you're done drilling, give your hand a much needed rest and then gently sand both the front and back of your piece. You don't want any rough or jagged bits poking out that might cut or snag your thread!
With your pattern piece as a reference, embroider the design using all 6 strands of your floss. I recommend using a backstitch. It'll take almost a full skein of floss to complete both patterns in the same colour.
Do you have any other ideas of how I can use my drill for crafty projects?
