A Problem Like Maria Skirt

I made a skirt out of an old curtain. Very Sound-of-Music, don't you think? A couple of months ago, someone asked me if I had ever made clothing for myself out of drapes. I'm quite sure they were joking, but I took it as a challenge!

After scouring a few secondhand stores, I found this retro gem in the rough -a golden damask-like patterned curtain.

The curtain fabric was quite sturdy, so as much as I adore skirt patterns with cute tucks and gathers, I knew I had to keep it simple and clean-lined. I altered an old skirt pattern that had a wide ruffled piece on the bottom. I omitted the bottom piece and extended the top panel to an acceptable length for a lady!

This skirt was pretty easy to whip up. The curtain had a lining on the back, so I kept it attached and cut it out along with my main fabric.

Oops! I didn't realize until after I uploaded my pictures, that I accidentally dressed like a modern day Snow White. It made me giggle.

Have you ever sewn something using 'unconventional' materials?

P.S. Special shout out to my friend Sam for doing a very impromptu photo-shoot!
